Is Your Coffee Maker BPA Free?... Scientists Discover That Heat Dramatically Increases Leaching of BPA Into Beverages Up To 55 Times More Rapidly Than Without Heat
If you own a conventional hot brew coffee maker, the internal plastic parts may contain the harmful chemical called BPA.
For example, drip coffee makers have a plastic cone that houses a coffee filter that hot water passes through when brewing coffee. Leaching of BPA can occur at room temperature, but according to recent scientific studies at the University of Cincinnati, plastic with BPA becomes increasingly dangerous when heat is applied. Scientists found that adding hot water to plastic containing BPA poses the greatest health risk causing BPA to leach up to 55 times more rapidly than without heat. Check with your manufacturer to make sure your coffee maker does not contain BPA. If it does not say BPA free you may be exposing yourself to health risks. The Hourglass is made from health safe BPA free plastic and uses no heat, so each and every cup is just pure coffee. Heat Causes Chemical To Leach From Plastic, USA Today, Jan.30, 2008
